Afghan women have suffered the most during years of civil war and the Taliban rule. Women could not get a job or go to school. Five years after the Taliban's fall, they have gained some rights to go to school and get jobs, however, many women still wear burqa (aka chaderi) which covers their body head-to-toe, out of fear of male members of the house or the return of the Taliban. Some risk backlash against the male members of the family and secretly attend literacy classes, wearing burqas when going in and out of the classes in case other males recognize them learning something. The situation has seen little progress outside Kabul, where almost all adult women cover themselves up with burqas. However, there are some brave women who would work as doctors or go to college under the permission of their husbands.
